Most of the movie deals with him trying to fit into society, and the ridicule and hatred that he has to face. The story revolves around a creation named Edward Scissorhands who literally has scissors for hands. Would Edward Scissorhands be an example of a gothic movie? Not only does it have a very creepy setting, but even more so, it has some very serious themes. Most (if not all) of his films are in stop motion, which is a painstaking and time consuming process. While I'm not a big fan of his movies, I really appreciate the work that he puts into them. Several of these include The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, and Frankenweenie. Besides, it's directed by Tim Burton, correct? If so, he's known for making a lot of "gothic" themed movies. May 14, - That's a perfect example of a gothic film. While most of the points in the last paragraph ring true, I think another reason for this is because unlike books, where you can create as many pages as you want, movies have some serious time constraints, and you can't always fit all of the material into two hours. In relation to the last paragraph, I have noticed that of these gothic films don't seem to translate well when they're on the big screen. These movies are considered different from horror movies in that they rarely use the same devices to create suspense, generally lack scenes involving large amounts of gore, and tend to focus more on the interaction between characters as points of tension or plot. Since the start of the motion picture industry, there have been attempts to create film versions of classic gothic literature from the 18th and 19th centuries and to capture the essence of the genre in new tales set in modern times. A defining feature of many gothic movies is the setting in which the characters exist, often acting as a character itself and providing both atmosphere and plot advancement. The themes often revolve around dark subjects such as obsessive emotional states, villainous family plots, evil and the supernatural, although there are many others and several variations. Ulmer Although the stars of The Black Cat, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, have more famous performances, their work here. Dracula (1979) A gothic romance starring Frank Langella and Kate Nelligan. Haunted houses, ghosts, mysterious husbands, isolated manors surrounded by windswept. If you want to re-add it, I won't delete it again, even if it's not on the requisite number of people's "Gothic" shelves.Gothic movies are those in a specific genre of film that attempts to recreate the themes and environments present in classic gothic literature. Gothic horror is a genre that appeals to something so innate that it’s been around since the early 1800s. "Gothic" can be a relatively subjective term, not as cut-and-dried and easy to define as such even for people who know literature and many other people are relatively clueless about what it is (as some of their list additions demonstrate!) I don't know the list creator, Rachel but I'm guessing she set up that criteria as a way of bringing in an objective yardstick, and replacing idiosyncratic individual judgement with the collective perspective of many readers (in the hope that the latter would be more likely to be accurate).Īll of that said, I can see Gothic elements in Dracula, though I personally usually associate "Gothic" with something set strictly in or around one particular sinister building. (I don't know how large that number has to be.) The more people who have a "Gothic" shelf (I don't myself) and list a particular book on it, the more likely it is that Goodreads will list "Gothic" as one of the book's genres. On the book records, where a list of "Genres" is supplied, the Goodreads program apparently lists every customized shelf name (like "Gothic," "Fiction," "Horror," etc.) that a certain number of people have all shelved the book as. Some very simple, generic shelf names, like Gothic, are used by a LOT of people, even though they don't coordinate with each other. But many people go on to create customized shelves of their own, sometimes by genre (including "Gothic"). When you join Goodreads, the program automatically sets your bookshelves up with three basic shelves (read, currently reading, and to read). Jon, good question! There is but one person can't do it alone. Jon wrote: "If the main consideration for a book's inclusion is it having the genre listing of Gothic on its book page, is there a way to make such a thing happen?" In Film Noir and the Gothic, Jay McRoy analyses film noir in the context of Gothic cinema.
